In 1839 the British invaded Afghanistan. A few years later they tried to retreat to India over the mountain passes. They were surrounded and butchered. Only one survived. So what did they learn? And is it true the whole excursion came about because a british spy under a barge overheard the Tsar and Napoleon talking about their own plans for Afghanistan? I spoke to William Dalrymple about his book Return of a King: The Battle for Afghanistan for a great show called Shelf Life. It airs tonight on TVS at 7.30pm – Digital Channel 44. Get a taste here.
