Of course the main reason it is derided is because about 30-40 years ago women entered the profession in huge numbers...

I would love to be a teacher. And I think i'd enjoy it and be bloody good at it. But teaching as a profession (many wouldn't even compare it to being a doctor or lawyer anymore) has been do downgraded and derided (by exactly the kind of angry guff that Janet has been putting out there) that why would you want to?

I'm actually OK with a bit of bias, as long as the biased person can acknowledge that's where they're coming from. Everyone is biased to some extent, but I think if we can make a note of it and discuss situations then it's a good thing because it can encourage critical thinking.

I couldn't help but notice the 'Brecht' in her name either! It's a bit ironic, isn't it?

I agree, teaching is hard, and probably one of the hardest professions to be good at. I just wonder how much that has to do with individual teachers, and how much it has to do with the structure and syllabus. I had some awful teachers at school, but I was independent enough to learn regardless of their teaching methods. I think there's a little too much spoon-feeding in school and perhaps that is when unacknowledged bias gets out of hand.

Furthermore, I'm compelled to bring up the fact that this is the only woman on the ABC board of directors...there's meaning in that too, I'm sure.

Glad to be of help with the correction, apparently some people don't appreciate it over at LiveNews, but at least you do!
